This might seem a little bit off-topic for my blog, or it might not. I was really drawn to share this today, not sure why. I do tend to trust my instincts though, so I am 100% certain that at least one of you needs to hear this in a big way.
Juan Enriquez: Your online life, permanent as a tattoo
What you post online NEVER goes away. It may take you a little bit of time to find it online, but you can. For example, there is the ‘wayback machine’ that will show you what a particular web page looked like a long time ago. Even if the page is gone now, if you know the URL you can put it in and Voila ~ you can see what that page looked like before. Their is even a calendar so you can go back to a specific date to see what was there.
I’m not sure very many people are aware of that. I have used it. There have been a couple of times where I have been interviewed and I shared a link to the interview on my website, then years later, I check that link and the page of my interview is not there anymore. All I need to do is simply visit the wayback machine and I have all the text from the interview.
Something to think about when you are talking to your kids about posting online. Even deleted stuff is still there. For a lot of you, maybe you need to have a good talk with yourself about what you are posting online.
Just because it was funny at 18 doesn’t mean its something you want people to see when you are 26, or for your grandkids to see once they grow up.
Think about it. If its online ~ its forever.
