I wrote a post yesterday about Practicing Gratitude. I had some feedback and I would like to write a follow-up for you.
Some of you think that if you are grateful for what you have, you are being complacent. That is simply not true. Just because you are happy that you have a roof over your head doesn’t mean that you can’t plan on moving somewhere else or fixing up where you are now. Just because you chose to be happy where you are working right now doesn’t mean that you will never have a better job. Just because you are happy that your bills are paid, doesn’t mean that you can’t want more money.
Being grateful for what you have, and practicing gratitude is a SEPARATE subject from the things you want but don’t have in your life yet.
You need to practice gratitude so that you feel better. When you think about the great things you have already it can energetically propel you forward. When you neglect to practice gratitude it is easy to start to focus on all that is missing in your life. It is easy to get depressed.
I know that I certainly don’t have everything I want in my life yet, but I am not going to think about it day in and day out and depress myself. I have been there, I have done that. It does not feel good and all it did was keep me stuck in a loop of depressed feelings. I sure as heck couldn’t be motivated to work, or write or get off my ass when I was in that depressed loop.
Being stuck like that disconnects you from your Higher Self and your intuition. The flow of inspired thoughts stops. You are not able to take any inspired action towards what you want because you have no inspiration.
Sitting and thinking about being sad and lonely is not going to help you meet anyone. Who wants to date someone who’s all sad and depressed? If you think about how grateful you are that you have friends (or family, or legs to walk out of your house with), it will uplift your energy, and you will get out there more. You won’t be thinking about the ‘bad’ stuff, so you will be able to create more good stuff.
Sitting and thinking about how much money you need, or how much money you don’t have, isn’t going to get you any more money. Worrying about money is really disempowering. I don’t care how broke you are ~ I have been there too. When all I thought about is being broke, or that what I had, or what I could make wasn’t enough, guess what…. What I did have dried up!!
When this happens, you are worse off than when you started. You have essentially disconnected yourself from YOU. No inspiration, no actions, no movement, no LIFE.
So, even if there are a lot of things you want but don’t have yet, keep being grateful. You will notice a difference.

Your comment on being grateful and wanting more being separate, is exactly right! I’ve always viewed it that way.
Great that you cleared that up for your readers.
Thanks Vicky, I’m glad you ‘get it’. I do hope this post helps people who didn’t quite understand before now. 🙂
Tamara, what a great post. Gratitude and really “FEELING” is key. 🙂
Thanks Nicole 🙂
What a great article. I agree that wanting more in life is not a bad thing. When you stop trying to improve, you THEN become complacent in life. We are all destined for greatness, we need to believe in ourselves.
Thanks Anne Marie
